St. Nicholas Potluck Lunch

On Sunday, December 8, 2013, from noon till 2 pm we will host our St. Nicholas Potluck Lunch in our Community Life Center.  Sign-up sheets for side dishes, desserts, set-up and clean-up are available at the church or at the church office.  This is also the day we are gathering the gifts for children of the local elementary school with which we are partnering.  Those who have signed up to provide a gift are asked to be sure the child’s initials and number appear on the gift tag of the wrapped gifts.  Our thanks to all who are so generously supporting this important ministry.

Blessing of the Animals with special guest

On Saturday, October 5, 2013, at 10 am, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will celebrate an Interfaith Blessing of the Animals in the Courtyard of the church’s property.  (If it rains, come to the Courtyard and follow the signs for the weather plan location in our Concourse.)
This event honors the furried, feathered, and even finned members of the created order.  Animals of different varieties are welcome.  To keep our animal (and human) friends safe, please have dogs on leashes, cats in carriers, hamsters-bunnies-birds-etc. in their cages, horses haltered or bridled, turtles in their bowls.  This year we will also welcome special guest singer-songwriter Penny Pierce and her dog Chuckles.  Penny will perform her song Forever Home which can be viewed on YouTube at

Church power outage downs web site and email

Due to last evening’s intense storms there was a power failure at the church last night. This power failure lasted longer than the ability of our UPS’s (aka Uninterruptible Power Supply aka battery backup) to handle so all of the church computers were shut down including server that handles the email and web site. Even after power was restored the computers did not automatically power on as they usually do.

I went to the church this morning and powered everything back on and it all seems to be working now — as evidenced in part by this post. ;-)

Weather predictions for today indicate the possibility for more storms this afternoon and evening. If the church loses power again long enough to shut down the computers I will power everything back on as soon as practical.

Thanks for your understanding.

Planned St. Mark’s server outage today

The server at St. Marks will be off-line for about 1.5 hours today, August 15, while we replace the battery in the UPS. The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) keeps the server running for a few minutes in case of a power failure at the church. The battery is no longer capable of holding a charge and needs to be replaced.

The outage will take place sometime between 10AM and 2PM. Our web page will be off-line during that time as will email services.

Thanks for your understanding.

School Supplies Needed by Wilburn Elementary

From our Social Action Committee comes this important notice:

In our new partnership with Wilburn Elementary, we are learning that the school is lacking in many classroom supplies, things often provided by the children or the PTA. Being a school without a PTA and without a lot of middle class families, Wilburn often goes without. One example is that they do not have yard sticks for measuring projects, so they have to construct ones out of paper, which do not work very well. When you find a good deal on the supplies listed below, think of picking up an extra for our school. There is a box in the Concourse for the supplies.

List of School Supplies Needed by Wilburn Elementary

  • Pencils, pencils, pencils! (including thicker ones for Kindergarten)
  • Notebook paper (no collegiate-ruled)
  • Glue sticks
  • Copy paper (reams of plain copy paper)
  • Crayons (including some thicker ones for Kindergarten)
  • Black and white composition notebooks
  • Spiral bound notebooks
  • Scissors
  • Glue bottles
  • Tissues
  • Folders (two pocket folders, no design, no center fasteners)
  • Erasers
  • Tissues
  • Expo whiteboard markers
  • Yard sticks and meter sticks
  • Headphones-earbuds (with straight adaptor)

Wilburn is a year-round school—supplies are needed all year.
